For the past six years, ESG has been involved in organizing the India sector of the Health and Community Spring Programme during February - March and the Cities in the 21st Century Fall Programme during November - December ” course of International Honours Programme. International Honors Programs are offered in affiliation with the School for International Training (SIT), the accredited higher education division of World Learning (www.worldlearning.org). Bangalore is a locus for the semester long Cities Programme which also includes exposure to New York, Bangalore, Beijing and Buenos Aires. Originally known as the "Garden City", Bangalore is now known for world class information technology. In this cosmopolitan city, boundaries between traditional Indian culture and development frontiers often create a challenging scenario. Following their exposure to New York, 32 undergraduate students participating in the course from some of the best universities across the USA, along with 3 traveling faculty, spent a month in Bangalore and other cities of Karnataka, appreciating various qualities of these cities – the economics, the cultural diversity, the religions, social structures, development and environmental issues, administrative approaches, etc. The students also met local leaders, activists, academics and urban planners to study the tensions between traditional economic forces and the emerging information technology (IT) centres. You can read the Cities 2003 student's field report here. Visit the IHP website to know more about this program. |
