BMIC to be reviewed, not shelved: CM
Wednesday August 18 2004 10:45 IST

BANGALORE: In what appears to be an attempt to shelve the tag of anti-Bangalore Government, Chief Minister N Dharam Singh has announced that all the ongoing infrastructure projects in the City would continue, while stating that the controversial Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project would be reviewed.

On Tuesday morning, Dharam Singh made a surprise visit to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) and reviewed the ongoing works and assured that the sites at proposed Arkavati Layout, of which the tendering process was stayed, would be distributed by Jan 2005.

Besides, Singh also announced a new layout in the City, where the Government intended to distribute over 50,000 sites by July 2005.

‘‘This will be the largest housing layout in the country and first-of-its-kind as it will be an eco-friendly layout,’’ he added.

Speaking to mediapersons after the review meeting, the CM said that the Government would review the controversial BMIC project and look into the allegations of violations made by the Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises (NICE), which is executing the project.

‘‘If there are any violations made by the company, we will rectify the mistakes and take suitable action,’’ Singh said,.

However, he ruled out the possibility of shelving the project as suggested by former Chief Minister S.M. Krishna.

‘‘Krishna must have been hurt by the allegations levelled against him. We have to look into the necessity of future, where the corridor project will become necessary.”

“The Government has asked NICE not to take up township projects until the Government spelt out its view on the entire project. If the Government felt that the project was unviable and NICE violated agreement clauses, action would be taken,’’ Singh added.

ARKAVATI LAYOUT: On Arkavati Layout, Singh said that there was no need to panic, as he would be laying the foundation to form the layout by September.

Stating that the earlier tender for small works in ‘bits and pieces’ worked expensive, Dharam Singh said that fresh tenders would be invited by October and works would be completed by December.

Besides, a separate layout to form 500 sites to be distributed to MPs, MLAs and MLCs would be formed on Hosur Road, Singh added.
