TIMES NEWS NETWORK
[ MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2002 10:22:39 PM ]
BANGALORE: The proposed international airport at Devanahalli was among the 29 projects from Karnataka which had got environmental clearance from the Centre, Union Environment and Forests Minister T.R. Baalu said on Monday.

He told reporters here that the Centre had also accorded environment clearance for the Rs 2,000 crore Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) project, Vijayanagar steel plant and other industrial and infrastructure projects. ``In all, we have sanctioned projects worth Rs 30,500 crore for the state,'' he added.

The Centre had also given forest clearance for 23 projects in the state which include the international airport, BMIC, Seabird naval project at Karwar and the Bangalore-Mangalore oil pipeline project.

Ban on ODS: With a view to prevent usage of Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS), use of Chlorofleurocarbons (CFC) in manufacturing various products including refrigerators and air-conditioning will stop by the end of this year, except for essential medical purposes. ``Use of halons has already been prohibited from January 1, 2001. Use of other ODS like carbon tetrachloride, methylcholorroform and CFC for medical purposes will stop by the year 2010,'' Baalu said.

In Karnataka, 12 industrial units were being assisted with Rs 30 crore to phase out about 350 tonnes of ODS. Seven phase-out projects have already been completed in the state, he added.
