BANGALORE:
Virtually locking horns with former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda over
allegations of irregularities during his regime, former Karnataka Chief Minister
S M Krishna on Monday demanded the shelving of the controversial
Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC) Project and restoration of
acquired land to its
owners.
In a letter to Chief
Minister N Dharam Singh, he demanded that "the much delayed and controversial"
BMIC project should be cancelled forthwith and lands acquired from farmers be
returned to them, giving a new twist to the controversy close on the heels of
Gowda demanding a CBI probe into alleged irregularities targetting the Krishna
Government.
Krishna wanted
Singh to complete the restoration of land to its owners fixing a time
frame.
"To bring the curtain
down on all controversies over this project, save damage to the environment and
as a permanent solution to commuters travelling between Bangalore-Mysore, the
existing road should be upgraded into four-lane at an early date", Krishna who
flagged off work on expansion of the road on the eve of election
urged.
Breaking his long
silence over charges by Gowda, President of JDS, ruling coalition partner of the
Congress, against him and by the opposition that it has been converted into a
real estate project, Krishna hit out remarking "they are following Gobbel's
theory by repeatedly harping on baseless charges with an intent to taint the
image of tested Congress and its
leadership".
"This is a
conspiracy to weaken the Congress, its leaders and to sap the morale of its
ranks and file", Krishna charged.
