ESG's internship opportunities allow interested individuals to participate in a wide variety of ESG’s projects, campaigns and research and documentation areas, depending on their skills and interests.

Eligibility

• Academic Background - Undergraduate, Graduate or Post Graduate students with interest in areas such as Social work, Environmental law, Environmental Science, Capacity building, Urban Planning, Architecture, Sociology, Human Rights, International Finance Corporations etc.
• Fulbright scholars - ESG has supported a number of Fulbright Scholars who have worked on many of our campaigns.
• Skills and Experience - Enthusiasm to work with a flexible schedule is a key prerequisite for this internship. ESG works on a variety of issues and these are subject to change with little notice. ESG would certainly facilitate in finding areas of work of interests to the intern. Other required skills include: organizational skills, writing and communication skills, computer skills, field experience relating to intern's academic interests and ability to work independently.
• Language Requirements - Interns should be able to speak read and write English and a working knowledge of Kannada is preferable.

Additional Information

• Duration - ESG encourages internships of a minimum duration of at least one month. Interns are welcome to intern for longer periods too and many have interned for up to a year.
• Costs - ESG will not be able to provide any financial support for interns.
• Computers - ESG may provide a computer for interns but if interns can bring their own laptops it is always an advantage.
• Library - All interns are expected to assist in documentation work and use the ESG library as per the rules of the Library
• Internship Costs - For outstation interns, ESG cannot provide accommodation, however it can help find a suitable home stay or a budget hotel. Food costs too will not be covered by ESG. However if there is any field work, ESG will reimburse the cost of local travel expenses incurred for the field travel.

ESG welcomes volunteers to support its activities in a variety of areas. Contribution to the progress of vital environmental and social justice work is a good opportunity for individuals with an interest in more socially and environmentally equitable development. A sample of the areas of work are:

• Environmental Education outreach - Volunteers with a passion, dedication and enthusiasm to teach or facilitate, with a special focus on experiential environmental education are welcome to help us conduct environmental education in schools. Volunteers are needed to assist in coordinating our ‘Chiguru’ a student outreach program through activities in schools, including scheduling and giving classroom presentations on a variety of Environmental topics, preparing materials for presentations including display boards etc. They can also help this outreach through Schools having Eco-Clubs, literary clubs and a host of such interactive platforms.
• Translation - ESG works on public interest concerns and most of our team members are able to speak many local languages and conduct research in various disciplines in various neighbourhoods and regions speaking many south Indian languages. We are in need of translators, fluent in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Hindi and Urdu. Translators should be able to translate to and from English. They should also be fluent in legal, scientific and official languages. This will help ESG’s outreach and help raise awareness and empower people with information across language borders.
• Hosting Visitors - ESG has a large number of visitors from Academic, Research, Legal and Journalism backgrounds both National and International origins. Our Guests always prefer experiencing staying with families, eating local food and understanding local cultures and interacting with families. We need volunteers who will host, take initiative in introducing Bangalore, its food and culture in simple ways and help them understand Bangalore.
• Legal and General Research - ESG needs people with an interest and flair for public interest work to help access information through Right To Information, also conduct research on various ongoing campaigns.
• Conducting surveys - ESG’s public interest initiatives constantly requires data from affected communities and public opinion on the status of various issues in the city and outside. Students, individuals having flair to talk and gather information from the affected communities and the public are welcome to help us in many of our initiatives.
• Mobilizing communities -ESG’s public interest campaigns include mobilizing communities which means raising awareness through talks, slide presentations, film shows and interaction to help them stand up for their rights and demand access to information, participation and justice.
• Artists - ESG’s many campaigns need posters, placards, banners and a host of other materials that require some art work. Those talented in drawing, painting, sketching or having any other art skill are welcome to help us in many ways.
• Documentation - ESG’s Documentation centre requires constant support in updating our files and folders from various news paper reports, magazines, journals and a variety of online resources. Those with an interest to read and help us categorize and index news clips are always welcome.
• Website development - ESG’s website has been designed and maintained mainly by volunteer and intern support and we need people with web skills to help us keep our website updated at all times and help us make it reach out in many ways.
• Media - ESG’s campaigns and projects research has to reach the common man and people with skills in mass communication are welcome to support us in writing, designing and dissemination of our work.
• Photography - We at ESG are constantly working on a wide variety of campaigns and projects and many of us at ESG do take a lot of pictures. We need people with an acute interest in photography to help us in creative ways of using our photography to reach out to the world.
• Documentary Film Makers - ESG’s campaigns revolve around communities and their everyday struggles in saving the natural resources around them. While on our journey we encounter many interesting stories and struggles that need to be filmed and made into short documentaries. Amateur Film makers and those with an interest to work on such projects are welcome to volunteer with us.
• Office Support - ESG needs volunteers to provide clerical support, organize resources, and process mailings. Volunteers with computer skills can gain experience using word processing, updating database, developing communication, Screening and weeding our Documentation and even helping us keep our resources in order.
